Last month, Ed4Online posed the question, “Have you ever taken an online course for your own Professional Development?”

Expecting to receive more of the standard “yes/no” type of answers, I was pleasantly surprised by the number of people who took the time to share their personal experiences with online learning.

Of those who responded, a whopping 92% had taken an online course for their own professional development, many having taken more than one and a few selecting it as their learning method of choice for professional development needs.  Most respondents, if not all, indicated that it was an excellent way to keep up to date on skills and trends.

As expected, there are many factors students take into consideration when selecting an online course.  Students weigh the potential rewards against how much work is involved, how expensive the course is as well as how much time it will take to complete.

The history of graduate success and outcomes were important as well as course content, design, methodology, and the offering of up to date courses.  A preview of course content and example of how the material is presented would allow some students to weigh the course content and cost together to ensure it would lend value to the learner.  Flexibility of online learning remains important.  A few respondents mentioned that the reputation of the provider and the company’s professional respect in the industry lent necessary credibility to the program.

Pie chart

We had fantastic participation in our recent poll “If you were to take an online course, what type of textbook would you prefer?” with almost 100 people taking the time to cast their vote.  The results showed that 60% of respondents would prefer a physical textbook, while 40% would prefer an eTextbook (i.e. eBook or Kindle).

Those who preferred physical textbooks appreciated the “hands on” ability and freedom to skip around the information being studied, to easily review information, mark chapters, make notes and underline important passages.

Thank you to everybody who participated in our recent Graduate Student Outcome survey.  We had great results and loved reading everyone’s comments!  We will use the information to better improve our curriculum and course offerings.

Some highlights from the survey included:

Most of the students who completed the survey felt that passing their online courses gave them increased self-confidence in looking for and finding a job in any field.  Many of the respondents felt "quite a bit" to "very much prepared" for their future career or education goals as a result of taking their online courses.  And finally, in a large show of confidence in and support of Ed4Online's curriculum, a large percentage of respondents wish to learn more about other courses offered by Ed4Online.  We're working hard to get the news out about additional courses that we offer that might be of interest - so stay tuned!
