Become an Animal Grooming Specialist

Vet assistant with cute dog in her arms

Animal groomers are responsible for making client’s pets look their best. They work mostly with dogs, but some clients will bring in cats and other animals to be groomed. Groomers must be familiar with the different breeds of dogs they are grooming as there are different ways that specific breads of dog need to be styled.

Study.com lists the following as the most common daily duties of an animal groomer:

  • Brushing fur
  • Cutting and trimming fur
  • Clipping nails
  • Cleaning ears
  • Bathing
  • Drying fur
  • Styling fur
  • Sanitizing combs and sheers after using them on each animal
  • Scheduling appointments
  • Reporting issues or assessments to pet owners

Animal groomers work within veterinary clinics, pet supply stores, dog spas and kennels. Some animal groomers are self employed and have mobile grooming stations. They bring all of their grooming supplies with them. This is preferred by some clients because they do not have to bring their dogs to a grooming facility and they can schedule the grooming time around their own schedule. Animal groomers that are self employed have more flexible hours and may work weekend and evening hours.

The job of dog grooming is expected to rise 16% from 2018 to 2028. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states this is much faster than other careers. Animal owners today are willing to spend more money on their pets than in the past. Pets are now being treated as part of the family.
