The Blessing of Online Education by Mandy Baker

Military man with his wife

Online colleges are a fantastic option for military spouses. We move so often and trying to plan classes around our spouse’s schedules is near impossible, online classes make it easier to continue your education. When taking classes online, you can take them anywhere you transfer to and you can work your class schedule around your family’s needs. The important thing, like when choosing any college, is research. Make sure you pick the one that is right for you and your needs. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and even ask about special assistance for military families.

I started attending college classes online in 2008. I had no knowledge about online colleges when I started. Thinking back now, I am not sure what lead me to choose University of Phoenix for my associates. It was the only online college I knew of at the time! However, I picked up the phone and called them. University of Phoenix is one of the online colleges that gives military discounts. They even have specific admissions advisors for military members and their dependents. Once I received my AA through Phoenix, I decided to try something different for my Bachelor’s classes. I chose American Military University. AMU is designed for military members who don’t have a lot of time for their education. Their system is more relaxed than many of the colleges and you get to choose your own schedule, which is a huge bonus!

I’ve found online classes such a blessing. I don’t have to step away from my classes just because we transfer. I also don’t have to stress about finding a new school when we get to our new location. The online classes are there wherever you are! I have even been able to get my assignments in on time when we travel to visit family. Colleges like AMU are great because they allow you to take a break when you need it, and pick your classes back up when you are ready. I have taken a break during the transfer and then picked my classes back up once we were settled in. Taking classes online has allowed me the opportunity to continue my education in the way I have always wanted to, without taking away from the limited time I have with my husband or making it more difficult on me when we move. I recommend online classes to any fellow military spouse that asks me about it!
