When I was in college, everyone looked forward to winter break. It was a time to hang out with family, reconnect with high school friends, and get some much needed rest after exams. It was also a time to make plans for the upcoming semester; as well as some wonderful memories to sustain me during the spring.
When I began my research for this blog, I found many sites that offered sound advice on things that students could do before resuming their studies in January; suggestions included advising students to:
Consider online courses. Whether for credit or certification – this is a great time to take an online course in a topic that interests you. How about…
o Interior Decorating & Design
Brush up on Professional Development skills. Ed4Career offers a wide range of Professional Development courses designed to sharpen and enhance your skills and knowledge. Our Corporate Professional Development courses include:
o Business
- Or perhaps Behavioral Health is of more interest to you? In that case, we offer many courses under:
o Mental Health and Psychology
(Ed4Career has an extensive catalog of courses - check out our complete Career and Professional Development course catalogs here)
Consider a short-term internship or simply shadowing a professional in your field of study.
Work on your resume and cover letter; investigate careers and companies that might be a good fit for your professional goals.
Order textbooks or eBooks online for the next semester.
Get ahead on financial paperwork. Complete the FAFSA, look for scholarships, and explore financial aid options.
Look for a temporary job to increase cash flow and savings; possibly even start putting out feelers for a summer job while you’re at it.
But perhaps the best suggestions were the ones that said “Go somewhere, DO something”! Have some fun - you’ve worked hard!
Spend quality time with family.
Build a snowman; or if you’re at the beach – a sandman.
Read a book; an old favorite or a soon-to-be new favorite.
Take a spontaneous road trip; whether alone or with friends or family, turn the radio up, roll the windows down and let the fresh air in.
Create something – if you paint, draw, write, or play an instrument; take some time for the creative side of you.
Volunteer.
Get outside; go to a local park, the zoo, or a theme park.
Exercise.
Visit the Museum, Symphony Orchestra, Theatre, etc. or take a walk downtown.
Watch old movies or catch up on recent releases that you may have missed.
Above all else, give yourself time to relax and recharge this break – it’s necessary for your physical, mental and emotional health and will help you return to your coursework next semester in top form.
Wishing you all a wonderful holiday season!
