Proctored Exams - Don't Panic!

While registering for remote classes, have you noticed that certain class selections list “online/proctored exams”?  When taking online courses or certification exams there are instances when you will need to take proctored tests. A proctored exam is monitored to ensure you have no outside help while trying to pass your test. A proctored exam can be intimidating if you have never taken one before. Read on to learn more about proctored exams and push the worry aside.

Many professors offer proctored exams that you can take at home. It’s a recorded and video monitored exam. The recording is sent to your professor, and you often have to show the room you are taking the exam in. There can be no noise, and if a pet or someone walks in you need to explain what the disturbance is. Please note that in some situations, any disturbance will negate the exam. In these cases, it’s important to find a quiet location where you can ensure there will be no interruptions. Find out the testing rules and guidelines from your instructor in advance.

Certain classes like accounting or algebra might not offer online proctoring because you need to write down information to get your answer while taking the test. An option might be to take a proctored exam at a community college near you. Contact the closest college near you, and they will get you in contact with the testing center. There is a head proctor who will set up the scheduling.

Some good advice? Don’t wait to schedule your exam until your test is a few days away. If you can, try to set up your test days in the beginning of the semester. Sometimes, it can take weeks to secure an open spot if you wait! Keep in mind, there may be a small fee to take the exam.

Before you know it, the semester will be over. Don’t avoid taking proctored exam courses, they can be easier than you think, and you will be one step closer to finishing your program, certification, or degree!
