HVAC/R Technician Program

HVAC technicians work on heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration systems. Their job duties, according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, include:

• Installing, cleaning, and maintaining HVACR systems
• Installing electrical components and wiring
• Inspecting and testing HVACR systems and components
• Discussing system malfunctions with customers
• Repairing or replacing worn or defective parts
• Recommending maintenance to improve system performance
• Keeping records of work performed

It is possible for HVAC technicians to specialize in certain areas including radiant heating systems, testing and balancing, commercial refrigeration and solar panels. The majority of HVAC technicians are contractors in plumbing, heating and air conditioning.  They may also be self employed or work in educational services.  HVAC technicians practice their trade mostly in homes, schools, cooperate buildings, hospitals, stores and factories. They may stay in one place for the day or travel to different locations making service calls.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists some important qualities of a great HVAC technician.

• Customer Service Skills- they often work in homes or business offices and it is important for them to be punctual and friendly. They must be able to explain the problem in layman’s terms to the customer and explain what is involved in fixing the issue.
• Detail Oriented- they must maintain records of their work. This includes the nature of the work performed, how much time it took and the specific equipment they used
• Math Skills- they need to calculate the correct load requirements to ensure the equipment can properly heat and cool the space.
• Mechanical Skills- they must clearly understand how to disassemble and reassemble the equipment. They must also know how to program the equipment if needed.
• Physical Stamina- they spend many hours standing and walking throughout their day.
• Physical Strength- they are required to lift heavy equipment, sometimes without help.
• Time-Management Skills- they often have multiple maintenance calls within a day. They need to be able to make all of the appointments and have time to complete the necessary repairs.
• Troubleshooting Skills- HVAC technicians must identify the problem with the equipment and figure out the best and most efficient way to repair it. 

HVAC technicians are expected to remain in demand. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that it will be a career that grows much faster than other occupations with a 15% increase expected between 2018 and 2028.
