The Art of Self-Discovery

Have you ever found yourself thinking, “who am I and how did I get here?”

With spouses, children, jobs, and life events demanding our attention, it’s not uncommon to occasionally lose sight of who we are. We set aside our dreams, goals, or aspirations to deal with the “here and now”.

Are you currently feeling lost? It is never too late to re-discover yourself!

Get to Know Yourself

Spend some time getting to know yourself. What do you like to do? Where do you like to go? What are you passionate about? Ask yourself what, if anything, you would change in your life to make yourself happier. If money and time did not matter, what would you do for a career? Is there something you have always wanted to try but haven’t? Using these questions as a foundation, start a journal and write down your thoughts and feelings as they come to you. Use this creative exercise to design a “map” to finding yourself. Keep the journal somewhere easy accessible so that when you feel lost, you can reflect on your entries to help you to remember who you are and where you are headed.

Schedule Some “Me Time”

Juggling home, work and friendships can monopolize our time, but this does not mean we should neglect ourselves. As the flight attendants say on a plane…you must put the oxygen mask on yourself first before you can help someone else. Make yourself a priority and set aside one day a week to have some “me time”. Whether you spend this time getting pampered, taking a yoga class or quietly reading, it’s important to use this time to focus on you. Once you start taking time for yourself you will begin to feel more relaxed, happier and able to give back to your family and community.

Invest in Yourself

During the process of self-discovery, you may find a hidden passion, talent, or even a desire to change your career path. These are all normal stops on the road to finding yourself. Investing in yourself means investing in your passions, talents or even taking the leap to change your career path. Have you always loved photography, enjoyed planning parties, or had an interest in the medical field? When you turn your passions into a career, you will never work a day in your life.

Everyone feels lost at times, but you don’t have to stay lost. Spend some time finding out who you are and what you want. It is not selfish to explore what will make you happy and work towards that. When you find yourself, hopefully you will also find ways to bring contentment and peace to your life. Doesn’t that sound wonderful?
