Many people choose substitute teaching to further their career or to gain experience working in classrooms and with students. Our Substitute Teaching course breaks down each grade level in sections that discuss what students are learning and possible activities to implement for each curricular area. We also describe ways to create smooth day to day routines, behavior management techniques, and tips for having success as a substitute teacher.

After completing this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify what students in elementary grades are learning and activities for each curricular area
  • Describe what students in middle and secondary grades are learning and activities for each curricular area

Substitute Teaching Grades K-12 Module 1
Routines and Behavior Management

Substitute teachers must be prepared to deal with variety of classroom and student situations. In our first module, we discuss how to set up a structured morning routine. We also describe what day to day tasks look like, as well as long term aspects of being a substitute teacher. Finally, we discuss what kindergarteners typically learn and possible activities for each curricular area.

Grades 1 - 3

  • Microsoft Office 2013 or higher. Also, you could use a general Word Processing application to save and open Microsoft Office formats (.doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx)
  • Internet Browsers - Google Chrome is highly recommended
    • Cookies MUST be enabled
    • Pop-ups MUST be allowed (Pop-up Blocker disabled)
  • The Kindle Reader App or VitalSource Bookshelf App are needed for many of our courses (No special equipment needed. This can be downloaded for FREE onto your computer.)
  • PowerPoint Viewer (if you do not have PowerPoint)
  • Adobe PDF Reader
  • QuickTime, Windows Media Player &/or Real Player
